The SBCTC received one of sixteen awards from College Spark this round for its Student Attributes for Math Success strategies proposal. The grant is for $50,000.
With its grant, the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) will build a coalition of high school teachers, college faculty and administrative leaders comprised of five demonstration sites located in these areas and connected with existing state initiatives: Yakima Valley, Kitsap County (Bremerton), Seattle, Renton and Kent/Des Moines, Washington. The broad goal will be to increase student preparation for post-secondary success by deepening and extending existing curricular work and teacher professional development in support of implementing the Student Attributes for Math Success. The coalition will develop, implement, share, and evaluate products, and lessons learned, that then will be disseminated to statewide initiatives, such as Navigation 101 and Achieving the Dream. The student attributes include:
- Demonstrates intellectual engagement
- Takes responsibility for own learning
- Perseveres when faced with time-consuming or complex tasks
- Pays attention to detail
